Golf in Mexico

Advertisers

The Mexican government is all too aware of the importance of its tourism industry to the country’s overall economic growth. Tourism brings in billions of dollars to Mexico and, like many other countries around the world that have not realised the benefits of promoting golf as much in the past, this is one country that is taking its golf very seriously.

Mexico may not have the abundance of golf courses to offer its visitors but what it does have is a real affectionate quality about its courses. Many are located in spectacular settings, with some carved into vast deserts or craggy hillsides. Whatever the setting, playing golf in Mexico is a new experience and one that looks set to take the world of golf by storm in the coming years.

The Guaymas and San Carlo area has mild winter weather, even milder than Arizona, and also offers beautiful white sand beaches, lovely desert/sea vistas and is much cheaper than most top American golfing destinations.

Guaymas is a small sea port city while San Carlos is a modern town with a beautiful, wide boulevard as the main street. Golf may not be part of the daily lives of the locals but that doesn’t mean it isn’t taken seriously. The courses are very well looked after and there are quite a few in the pipeline for development.

Courses, however, that will bring a smile to your face include the Ocean Course at Cabo Del Sol, which is the work of Jack Nicklaus. It forms part of a 1, 800 acre resort next to the ocean and is pretty special to say the least.

Others include Palmilla, Nicklaus’ first venture into golf course design in Latin America, Campo de Golf Loreto, Las Hadas La Mantarraya, one of the country’s finest tests and La Vista Country Club.
